[ARCHIVED] Danville Selects Mayor and Vice Mayor; Announces Community Awards

Mayors Installation 2023

Karen Stepper will serve as Mayor for 2024 and Dave Fong will serve as Vice Mayor.

The Town of Danville selected its Mayor and Vice Mayor for 2024 during its meeting December 5. The Council selected Karen Stepper to serve as Mayor and Dave Fong to serve as Vice Mayor through a vote at the meeting. The Council also recognized several community organizations and individuals for their service to the Town.

Karen Stepper served as Vice Mayor this year and was first elected to the Town Council in 2002. This is her fifth time serving as Mayor. Dave Fong was first elected to the Town Council in 2020, and previously served as a member of the Senior Advisory Commission. The mayoral rotation in Danville is a one-year term that begins the first Tuesday in December, and both the Mayor and Vice Mayor positions are appointed by, and rotated among, the Councilmembers annually.

Two special awards were given for significant and lasting contributions to the Danville Community:

The Michael K. Shimansky Community Service Award recognizes those serving the youth community in Danville and is usually given to a young Danville resident. The award is in honor of the 20-year Councilmember who, prior to his passing in 2009, encouraged youth to improve their community through service. This year, San Ramon Valley High School student Graciela Kerr was recognized for her work teaching and leading others in the community.

The Danville Award is the Town’s highest honor. Joseph A. Calabrigo was recognized for his lasting impact on the Town over the course of nearly 39 years of service as a Town employee, as well as 30 years serving as the Town Manager.  “We just celebrated our 40th anniversary, and he has been here the entire time, making Danville the special place that we live and raise our families,” said outgoing Mayor Robert Storer in announcing the award.

The Council also recognized milestone years of service and contributions of outgoing commissioners and elected officials. During the Community Awards, Councilmembers recognized the following individuals and organizations:

  • Mark and Leslie Graham for work with Guide Dogs for the Blind
  • The Thrift Station for contributions to the Discovery Counseling Center
  • Daniella Monge for serving as a translator for those with special needs
  • Michael and Sandra McDonald for their work improving the Bounty Garden at Hap Magee Ranch Park;
  • Danville Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors for their outreach to local businesses.
