Town Council Special Meeting Set for June 8
Council to consider plans for expanding outdoor dining areas

The Danville Town Council has scheduled a special meeting for 9:00 a.m. on June 8, 2020 to examine plans that would allow certain street segments to close so restaurants can expand outdoor seating to maintain social distancing.

Once the Shelter in Place Order allows customers to dine outside, most restaurants may apply for a FREE Temporary Outdoor Seating Permit to expand dining areas within their existing patios or in private parking lots adjacent to their restaurants to allow for required social distancing. Several restaurants in Town do not have the space to expand in this fashion, so the Town evaluated specific street closures to support these restaurants.  

The health order closed restaurants initially because indoor seating posed a high risk of COVID-19 transmission as diners sat close together for an extended period.  Providing safe and protected areas within the public right-of-way would allow restaurants to begin serving customers while providing social distancing.

Economic Development Manager Jill Bergman said she is excited about the plan and the ability to work with restaurants once the restriction is lifted.

“We’ve been developing this plan for the last several weeks and advocating with the county to allow for outdoor dining to be restored,” she said. “Once the green light is given, we are going to be ready to go.”
