[ARCHIVED] World Music Series Returns with 'A Night in Greece'

Opa! Community Invited to ‘A Night in Greece’

World Music series returns to the Village Theatre

Get a sense for the spirit of the Greek Isles on March 19, 2020 as the Town of Danville’s world music series returns with A Night in Greece.

The ‘A Night In…’ series brings music and dance from around the world here to Danville. At the upcoming show, attendees will enjoy the outstanding talents of Helios Greek Band.  Helios, one of the most versatile Greek bands in Northern California, has performed at Greek festivals throughout the western United States, as well as performing at the celebrity weddings of San Francisco Giants player Hunter Pence, and Napster founder Sean Parker. They perform traditional Rembetika, Laika, Nissiotika, Dimotika and Modern Greek music.

A brief overview on what some of those styles mean: Rembetika, considered to be the blues music of Greece, originated in Asia Minor and was created by refugees entering Greece from Smyrna following it’s occupation and destruction in 1922.  Laika is described as popular and mainstream Greek music.  Nisiotika is mostly rooted in folk music and dance.

The evening will also feature, the Resurrection Greek Orthodox Dance Program to showcase traditional Greek dancing.  In 2018, they won 1st place in the Advanced Junior category at the Greek Orthodox Folk Dance and Choral Festival.  They will present a few dances along with a basic dance lesson prior to the band taking the stage.

A Night in Greece is just one of an ongoing concert series at the Village Theatre focusing on world music.  The next concert on June 12, 2020 will feature Hawaii as the destination.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m., showtime at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Theatre, 233 Front St.

Tickets are $30 for adults, students with a valid Student ID are $15. Tickets are available online at www.danville.ca.gov/villagetheatre, at the Village Theatre Box Office, or by phone at (925) 314-3400.  Box Office hours are Wednesday – Friday 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
